Dad’s Dollar Diary #9: Inspirational Story on NPR’s

Dear Diary,

Me and the kids always listen to NPR on our drives during the week. One of my favorite segments is Marketplace with Kai Ryssdal. This week, they have been airing interviews each day about the cross-section between tech and labor called Strange bedfellows: What farms and tech startups have in common. Today they aired a super-inspirational interview called “One man’s path to citizenship” with a man named Lazaro Carrion.

lazaro-carrionLazaro came to the U.S. illegally when he was a young child. He studied hard, got a full scholarship, and received his college degree in economics in Walla Walla, Washington. After graduating, he could not find a job because he was undocumented. After a few years, he decided that the only way he could realize his dreams was apply for a Visa, go back to Mexico, and “get to the back of line.” He told his parents that he bought a one-way ticket to Mexico and that he didn’t know when he would be back in the U.S. That takes guts. It was a happy ending. Anyways, that’s the kind of inspiring story you want to hear.
