Video: A Bottle of Water at the Movies

Watch on YouTube: A Bottle of Water at the Movie Theaters

My son Matthew talking about why we didn’t buy that over-priced bottle of water at the movie theaters when we went to see Ip Man 3. It’s a martial arts action flick and one of his new favorite movie series. He wanted to show the movie trailer in here too.

Hi this is Matthew from A in Finance.

That’s me and my dad doing some karate poses in front of the Eiffel Tower last summer. We chose this photo because today we’re going to talk about the movie “Ip Man 3” and what I learned at the movie theater.

I am a recent fan of the Ip Man movies. Ip Man was Bruce Lee’s kung fu master in real life. So the movies are loosely based on him. I think it’s one of my top new movie series after Terminator. My favorite is T2, of course.

Anyways, I’m a big fan, so my dad took me to see Ip Man 3 at the movie theaters the other week. Ip Man 3 is really cool too and it even has Mike Tyson in it. He’s one of the best heavyweights of all time. First, let’s watch a short movie trailer because it’s really cool.

That was cool, right? Anyways, Ip Man 1 and Ip Man 2 are streaming on Netflix, so check them out. And see Ip Man3 if it’s at a theater near you. I highly recommend them.

Back to the story. So my dad took me to see Ip Man 3. We got there early and I was a little thirsty, so I asked my dad if we could get something to drink. He told me, “Just get a sip at the water fountain”.

I said, “But I want something to drink while we are watching the movie. It’s just a bottle of water.”

And he told me, “OK, you can get a bottle of water if you want to pay for it with your own money.”

So I said, “OK. How much is it?” We looked at the vending machine and my dad said, “It’s $4.25 for a bottle of water.”

“What?!” I said. “$4.25. Not worth it. I’ll just take a sip from the water fountain.”

My dad says, “That’s right. That’s just like how one of your friends bought that piece of gum for 5 bucks. Not worth it, right?”

He asks me, “How much does a bottle of water cost at your karate studio?”

I tell him, “75 cents.”

My dad says, “It’s cheaper at Vons and Ralphs too. And how much is it if we fill our own bottle at home?”

And I say, “It’s free. Plus it’s good for the environment. Now I get it. Thanks dad.”

Then I ask him, “But how come it’s so expensive at the movie theater? I mean, how can they charge so much?”

Well, my dad likes to ramble on about stuff and ask me questions instead of telling me the answers. So he tells me that they kind of have you trapped. He then asks me a bunch of questions like, “When you go to the movies, do you need a ticket to come in?”

Me: “Yes.”

Dad: “And can you leave the theater and come back in?”

Me: “No, I don’t think so.”

Dad: “That’s right. And can you bring in food from the outside?”

Me: “Not really.”

Dad: “Yeah, unless you try to sneak some things in. But a big bottle of water is hard to hide.”

Me: “OK. So if you want to eat or drink something during the movie, you have to buy it from them.”

Dad: “Yup. That’s what’s called a captive audience. They kind of have a monopoly while you are there. If you don’t want to wait until the movie is over, you have to pay out the nose to get your snacks at the theater. It’s the same thing at places like Disneyland and Raging Waters.”

Then my dad starts to tell me about why the theaters have to charge so much because they have to split the ticket fees with the movie studios. To keep him from rambling on, I tell him, “OK, OK, OK. Let’s just go in and watch the movie trailers after I get a sip of water from the water fountain.”

Anyways, so my dad was trying to teach me about the value of a dollar. The lesson was that I just can’t spend money without first thinking if what I’m buying is worth it.
